Right, so you have a business idea, thought of a name and a plan of action. Excellent, now you need a website. This may seem like a scary place, filled with technical people who are willing to snicker behind your back at how technically inept you are.

It needn’t be so scary, these days creating a very functional website is actually quite simple. The runaway technologies that open source communities have brought have created many platforms to launch excellent websites. All you need is a fairly cheap and cheerful hosting service, most allow direct installs on various Content Management Systems (or CMS).

Have I lost you? Don’t worry, you don’t need to grasp the full concept, all you need to understand is the statement… Content. That’s the key. The good old days of website building involved heavily knowledgeable computer programming for complex websites. HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, you name the language, most web architects had to learn a vast array of technologies, and use them in tandem to build a site. This is still case, but thousands of people now write code for open source projects, and make these projects available to anyone who would like to use them. This enables the average Joe Blogger to use these projects and create a site that would have taken 10 years to create, in 15 minutes. And most importantly allows you to control the content that goes into your site. You update it, you control it, with intuitive interfaces that anybody will be able to learn.

One of these great projects is WordPress.org. WordPress is a vast Content Management System, with a massive following and a huge community of very talented web developers. The standard installation will give you plenty of functionality, but you can extend the system to any function you require. From accounting, to online stores, to portfolio galleries. Its an endless pit of fantastic ideas and functions, backed by people willing to help.

Where do we fit into this world of exciting code sharing? Well we have hosting partners with excellent supportive services. We have the technical know-how to to setup up any one of the open source options out there. We also have skills in coding and design, so we can take these standard installations and make them your own. We will brand them to suit any existing corporate identities, or we offer a full service from ground up. Including logo design, stationery, advertising material and brochures. We will help you choose the right modules to suit your business needs, and we can make the site look the way you want it to look. There are ways of integrating WordPress into existing websites and taking existing designs and applying these to the WordPress standard templates to create your corporate feel. You can even keep your existing website and add all this great back-end functionality to beef up your online offerings.

If you are thinking about a website, it really makes sense to choose a site that you can control without a huge amount of coding. Most importantly taking very many hours out of your business generating days!

We can help at any point of your venture… give us a call.

Dark Pixel had the pleasure of working with Designer Bookkeeping (www.designerbookkeeping.com) on a unique project.

Gail from Designer Bookkeeping had a request to simplify her accounting systems, and possibly reduce overheads by instituting an alternative to main stream accounting packages. Everyone knows that accounting software is necessary and expensive. Especially for multiple company solutions, which all accountants and bookkeepers require.

Luckily Dark Pixel’s open source web application experience provided an interesting solution. We use an open source accounting package called webERP (http://www.weberp.org/HomePage) in house. Using a little technical know how and a few days worth of configuration, we provided Designer Bookkeeping a solution that allows and infinite amount of companies in a single accounting package. We installed this locally, creating a ‘single’ machine intranet, using MAMP (http://www.mamp.info) to control the local web environment.

Just goes to show that web solutions and applications don’t need to be live on the Internet. Using the open source web technology to replace main stream software expenses is something that is very achievable.

For more details, feel free to get in contact.

We hope to work with Designer Bookkeeping again the the future.

If any of our customers are looking for a quality Bookkeeper, Dark Pixel recommends calling Gail on 07919 915228.
